Modern Fireplace with Fire Balls

Step #1: Start by gathering your supplies

You’ll need the following:

Step #2: Cut off Fireplace Curtain Coils

Use the wire cutters to remove the metal fireplace coils by carefully cutting the ring that attaches the coil to the rod. Dispose of this is the trash can. If you have a wood fireplace insert or wood rack holder, remove and properly dispose of as well.

Step #3: Clean Debris Out of Fireplace

Use a shop vac to clean out any soot and debris left inside the fireplace. You can sweep it out and use a wet terry towel if you do not have a shop vac.

Step #4: Clean Soot Stains with Scrubbing Bubbles

Once debris is cleaned up, use your spray bottle of water to midst the firebox and spray with scrubbing bubbles. Let the scrubbing bubbles do their work for about 45 minutes. Then, scrub with your scrub brush, spray down with water again, and wipe clean with the terry towels.

Step #5: Spray Paint Inside of Firebox

Once cleaned to your liking, put on your respirator mask, ventilate the room by opening windows and doors and spray paint the inside of the firebox. If you already have a gas connection in your fireplace be sure the gas is off, as the spray paint is flammable while applying.

I was able to get one full coat out of one can of spray paint, I applied two coats. If you prefer darker coverage, I would buy 3-4 cans of spray paint. Allow some drying time between coats, however, it should dry very quickly. Be careful not to over apply each coat which can create dripping. If this happens wipe up with a terry towel and touch up with the paint on the next coat.

Step #6: Pour in Fire Glass and Arrange Fire Balls

Once paint is dry, pour in the fire glass on the bottom of the firebox or the bottom of the gas insert (if setting up for gas fireplace use). Then carefully stack the fireballs on top of the glass and Viola! You have converted your dirty old wood fireplace to a statement fireplace.

This can be converted to gas with professional inspection and installation of a gas insert. This project is for decorative purposes.
