Ocean Themed Nursery

Ocean Themed Nursery
We had the best time designing my son's ocean themed nursery before his arrival. Check out all of our selections, design process, and must haves for function, style, and comfort!

Feature Wall

We started the room design with the abstract ocean feature wall behind the crib. We mapped out the size of the wood panel squares we wanted with pencil markings, cut the wood trim pieces to the proper length, being sure to angle the corners, and set aside to install after the mural was complete. That way if there was any run off of the paint on the edges of the pencil marks we outlined, the wood trim pieces would nicely cover them for a clean finish. Once the mural was complete we used a brad nailer to install the trim, and caulked and painted them.

Crib Selection

I fell in love with the acrylic bars on this crib from Babyletto. I felt it gave the room a modern twist and felt very ocean like with the clear front. I also love that I can easily see my baby through the crib by just peeking my head in the door and through the baby monitor (which we now have sitting on the side table next to the rocking chair looking through the bars).

Changing Table and Rocker

We went to try out rocking chairs in person before purchasing online and I am so glad we did! The one I was thinking of buying was not as conformable as I thought it would be and this one is like a dream! I highly recommend the gliding ottoman as well. Comfort was key for us with this piece of furniture.

As for the dresser, I wanted it to serve as a changing table, good storage, and to bring in a more masculine wood element to the room, as I have a little boy. I found the perfect one on Amazon here, at a great price too! The changing pad, covers, and changing pad tray were also from Amazon.

Decor and Accents

I found this great roped wood shelf from Amazon to bring in a nautical touch. I’m a brass and gold kind of girl so anywhere I can throw in a little glam, I am going to, hence the light fixtures! I found the ceiling fan on Overstock and perfect acrylic and gold wall sconces that tied in the crib and fan. I did not have outlets on the wall so I opted for rechargeable led remote controlled sconces for the wall. It is a great work around without having the hardware your walls! I just loved this round wood mirror by Kelly Clarkson from Wayfair and almost all of the decorative decor items were from Home Goods or a local boutique. And of course the pup is one of a kind! 😉

Function and Storage

While a beautiful design was a must, we also wanted to make sure we thought through function and storage. The dresser I selected has a nice wide top that safely fit the changing tray and had deep, easy open drawers for those midnight diaper changes. You’ll definitely want a diaper pail to put next to the changing table. I found having a side table next to the rocker became essential to set bottles, a breast pump, sound machine, baby monitor, a Hatch light, etc.

I wanted a durable rug that gave a jute, beachy look but was soft, not scratchy, for those toddler tumbles as he grows. I found the perfect one to fit my needs from Lowes at a great price. I found the baskets on the floor at Home Goods, and while they added a nice beachy touch, they also serve for great storage! I keep books in the ones next to the rocker and stuffed animals in the one by the crib. I also have a larger one with handles (not pictured here) that I use as a laundry basket to the left of the dresser in the corner.
